The Hero Recipe: Minecraft-Inspired Cake

A Minecraft-Themed Birthday Party wouldn't be complete without a cake that captures the essence of the game. Here's how to create a Minecraft-inspired cake:

You will need:

  • 1 x 1kg boxes Woolworths Party Pack Mud Cake Slices 24 Pack
  • 1 x 85 g Aeroplane Original Lime Flavour Jelly
  • 1 x 85 g Aeroplane Original Berry Blue Flavour Jelly
  • 1 ¼ cup shredded coconut
  • 1 x 465 g Betty Crocker Vanilla frosting
  • 1 x 465 g Betty Crocker chocolate frosting
  • 1 x 110 g packet Kellogg's LCMs Split Stix Yoghurty Bars 5 Pack
  • Decorating: Minecraft figurines
  • How to make:

    1. 1 On a 40 cm x 40 cm ( or suitable sized) cake board. Begin to plan out your cake blocks. Note the existing icing will be covered as the cake is built.
    2. 2 Use the chocolate frosting, dab on sides of cake to stick the cake squares to the cake board and each other, building the bottom layer (see plan attached).
    3. 3 The bottom layer consists of x 4 -short side & x 6 -long side cake blocks with 2 whole cakes split in half horizontally to create the pool cavity. Follow with the second layer and third layer and half layers as directed in plan.
    4. 4 Cover the built fortress, excluding the pool opening generously with chocolate frosting. Use a small offset spatula dipped in hot water to spread the frosting without tearing the cake. Manipulate frosting to create sharp edges.
    5. 5 Line the pool with the vanilla frosting, this helps the berry blue pool to really pop. Refrigerate for an hour to set.
    6. 6 In a small jug combine 1 cup (250 mL) of boiling water and the Berry Blue jelly crystals, stirring to combine well. Set aside allowing to almost set but still be pourable.
    7. 7 In a medium microwave proof bowl combine 1/3 cup (80 mL) boiling water and the lime jelly crystals, stir well to dissolve. Microwave on HIGH for 20-30 sec to ensure the crystals are dissolved well. Add the coconut and stir well to coat evenly. Spoon onto a baking paper lined tray and spread out evenly. Set aside for a few minutes until the mixture is at room temperature. (Too warm and it will melt the chocolate frosting).
    8. 8 Using a fork to tease the mixture out, place the coconut on top of the cake blocks as indicated in the plan.
    9. 9 Gently pour the berry blue jelly into the pool cavity to the top. Open the LCM bar packets and press into place as per the plan.
    10. 10 Top with Minecraft figurines of your choice. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
